To lens wrap or not to Lens wrap?
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:40:22 pm »

So I have just taken delivery of My H3dII 50 and bought a pelican case with padded dividers (the 1510SC for those who are wondering) to keep it, the lens, a 15" laptop and some accessories in. My questions are;

-Should I keep the body/back, and lens wrapped in lens wraps inside the case?
-Will this add any significant additional protection?
- My fear that this will introduce more potential (for surface area) for dust and dirt to get into the case and work its way into the gear.
- It also will make it slower for setting up and breaking down to have to wrap and unwrap each component.
- Also, is there any disadvantage of storing the camera on its side in the case (the grip side up if the case is open) if it seems to pack better?

I want to strike the right balance of protecting my gear and ease of use...

If you're worried about it banging around in your case, just wrap the expen$ive bits in bubble wrap

Yes, bubble wrap. Large bubbles IMO are more prone to popping easily, so I'd just use the small/medium bubble-size stuff.

Don't. Wrapping the lenses or body in bags increases the risk of mould considerably, especially if like your id suggests you live by a salty sea. You can indeed use bubble wrap or have custom foam inserts designed. Don't wrap the lenses completely in bubble wrap unless for those assignments where the case might be banged around, bubble wrap traps humidity just like bags do.

I can make things very snug in the case with out wrapping them because of the movable padded dividers. I think this is my best bet.
