Sunrise in Cabo Sardao - Southwest Portugal
« on: February 25, 2013, 05:39:10 am »

These are some new photos I took in this location, which is a favourite of mine. I am lucky to have a house just a few minutes driving from here :)

So one morning I woke up really early, and was there for sunrise, with lots of wind and very cold. But the light was nice, and so was the view. All taken with Canon EOS 6D, EF 24-105L lens, and tripod.

I am sorry, I inadvertently hit the "post" button, before uploading all the photos... here are two more from the same outing.

#1 - All I see is the yellow lights blaring into my face.
#2  - Like the composition, but personally I might have increased the shutter speed a little to lighten the scene.
#3 - Cool subject, but it lacks visual elements to lead the eye.
#4 - Like it! Strong leading lines. To emphasize the moodiness, you might want to increase the contrast between the sky and the rocks on the right hand of the composition.

Thanks for the feedback Daniel, much appreciated. As for your comments, I can add the following information, as that may clarify things a bit:

#1 - I like the yellow glow of the lights, and agree they might be a bit too strong. During exposure, I have actually used a 2 stop hard graduated filter to tone them a bit. Maybe a candidate for B&W? I am including a similar composition taken a few minutes later, when there was a bit more ambient light, and so the lights from the lighthouse were not so strong.
#2 - I was looking for a brood and mencaing sky, so I stopped at 30s exposure, after some trials.
#3 - I was not after leading lines into the subject, just a plain "horizon" shot with sea, some mist, clouds lit by the sunrise light, and dark clouds on top.
#4 - Thanks, I will try that.

I have included a second shot, this one trying to illustrate the wonderful rock textures and patterns in the cliffs (plenty of folds, for those with a geological inclination).

Rgds.

On the second serie, I like image #1 (sardao_13_2_13_9_net.jpg) very much. The ocean shows its power. It reminds me Phillip Plisson's Avis de coup de vent sur les Poulains.

Thanks Daniel and Francois.

It is indeed a fun location, and this particular morning the weather was quite stormy. Very strong winds and rough seas.

Paulo...
Both are fantastic although the I like the first one better.
I would darken the light of the house a little bit to balance the whole scene :)
Great job!
