78 You Skate, 79 You're Mine
« on: February 19, 2013, 11:16:37 am »

Strapped my camera to a pre-positioned box on the passenger seat of my Mini using a remote shutter release. I shot with a 24-70 2.8 lens on my D7000, ISO at 800, shutter at 1/1200 and aperture on f/8. I was running at 78mph using the old adage, 78 you skate, 79 you're mine as they pertain to speeding tickets.

Is that fog, or smoke? It reads as smoke to me, for some reason. Perhaps it's very blue? Or maybe it's because the field as a burned look to it, which seems impossible given that the hay bales are still in it. Would they burn it off with the baled hay on the field?

To be honest, I am not sure what to make of this. I cannot satisfy myself that I even know what I am looking at, and I cannot satisfy myself as to whether this is a crappy photograph or a good one. I think that might mean it's good?

It's fog in the first stages of burning off. Very early am.

I should have said something about how I liked how the fog was rendered, and so on, but I felt that the virtues of the image are pretty self evident.

So I'm looking at early morning fog and very long dark shadows, rather than smoke and a burned off field. Interesting how the two look so similar, perhaps? Or is it just me seeing the "smoke/burned" look?

Not a burned off field...just long, deep shadows as would be found at 5:530 in the morning when the air is shrouded (I like that word) in fog which is slowly burning off.

And you're jealous?  ;) I have gone by scenes like this all over the midwest and out here in Utah and thought as I'm driving by, "That would make a great photo." Now I know why!

I drive from Austin, TX to Santa Fe, NM several times a year, and I always have the same thought.  Unfortunately, I'd say about 85% of the time, the ideal that I see as I'm driving by doesn't come through in the image.  It could certainly be "user error" on my part, but I tend to think that at least some of it, at least in the American west, is that the sheer expanse is part of what makes it grand, and that "feeling" can be hard to capture without being in the actual presence of it.  Is's probably exacerbated by the fact that usually on these travels I only have a small mirrorless camera "at the ready" (and I'm not really going to unpack the full kit on the highway) so my shooting options are somewhat constrained.

Anyway, all that said, I think it's a nice image, but it contains, for me, what is always the bane of my own roadside shots - the rancher's/farmer's fence that cuts straight across and adds nothing to the shot except a weird artificial segment at the bottom.
