How can I get rid of the purple splotches in this photo?

In Photoshop,

1. Add a blank layer and change blend mode to color.
2. Using a soft round brush, sample a color nearby the purple, then paint over the purple.
2. Resample and repaint if necessary until it looks OK to you.

That works well. Thank you.

Is there a technique to use if the background is more complex rather than mostly a single color?

Also, for photos with mixed light sources, is there a way to remove a color cast from a large area, ideally something like the way LR or ACR does white balance - click on an area that should be neutral.

For mixed lighting, you can use multiple adjustment layers, each one neutralizing a specific cast, and then paint in the neutralizing adjustment in the accompanying layer mask where appropriate for each lighting type.
