For Those interested.

Apparently recent apple updates are a cause.

easy fix from epson as follows....

1. Open System Preferences by clicking on the Apple Icon.
2. Select "Print and Scan" or "Print and Fax"
3. Highlight the LFP printer. (7890, 7900, 9900 etc..)
4. Click "Options and Supplies"
5. Then click the "Drivers" Tab
6. Set the option "Process by Printer" from ON to OFF.
7. Close and Re-open the application they are printing from submit the job again.

up and running now!

I haven't had any problems since my original post (knock on wood!)... but nice to know there's a fix.
