I changed my screen to a Brightscreen matte screen. It is definitely a lot darker than the High-D standard screen but the focus point pops out more.

Haven't had the need. Do you use the focus confirmation?

Dear Wilbur,

these focusing screens are available for use on the Hy6.

  • Bright matt screen with central split-image wedge and microprism ring
  • HD screen, super-bright screen with horizontal split image spot and extremely fine texture
  • Bright matt screen with microprism spot
  • Clear glass screen
  • AF- High-D-Screen

You could ask Nexor, a dealer in HK. As far as I know he should have some in stock.

Best regards,

Johannes

I am not sure the mechanism of the focus confirmation so I believe my eyes & want to change the focusing screen to see any improvement for focusing with the original screen.

Dear Johannes,

I want to try an all matt screen without any focusing aids( microprism or split type) since I'll be use for high mag. photography.

Thanks

Wilbur,
The Hy6 has an AF offset function in the options menu of the grip.  The focus confirmation indicator of the Hy6 is very accurate.  If you have a little time you can find the AF offset values for each lens you have to make it even more accurate.  Also you can select in the options menu the size of the focus area.  You can rely on the focus confirmation to be accurate, however since its only the center of the image,  I very often just focus on the screen.    I have several and change back and forth depending on what I am doing.   I like the High D with split prism probably best but also have the matte glass screen and the gridded screen with micro prism collar.   I also have a custom screen made by Bill Maxwell that has crop lines for my AFi-ii 12.

They are sort of expensive but vital to getting good images.  One thing to keep in mind is that all the 6000 series screens will fit the Hy6 so you may be able to find some second hand on ebay or wherever.   Still I think the screen that is best is probably the High D with split prism.

DHW also offers a special finder base and schneider 3x lupe that together make up a chimney style magnifying finder that has a very good view (plus diopter adjustment).  I find this easiest to focus critically with.

I use a custom Bill Maxwell Hi-Lux with center diagonal split recticle so I have good precision for manual focus as well.  I like it, but can't honestly remember using anything else, so it's hard to offer a comparison.  Looks like Eric has one too, so he may be able to offer a better comparison.

Honestly, I think the High D Rollei screens are very close to Bill Maxwell's Hi-Lux.

I've made my own crop lines with a fine sharpie pen in previous times when I shot with a p20.  Probably whatever screen you have has a smooth top side and the fresnel or matte surface below so make your marks on the top.  You can use something like a ice pick or scratch awl that has a fine metal point to scribe a line into the screen too, but I went for the pen approach as these can be cleaned away with alcohol if I change the back.  You just need to calculate the ratio of the back sensor size to the film plane (56mx56mm) and then transfer that to the size of the focus screen.  I don't think the screens are square so make sure to take that in account.   Focus screens are very delicate in that even small scratches will show up as dark spots, so be careful to not scratch it.  The underside with fresnel or matte surface is extremely susceptible to marring so place it down carefully on something soft and dust free, like a microfiber cloth and don't slide it around.

I use Photoshop's vector graphic tools to create precise masks for my applications (portrait, landscape orientations, 4:3 crop marks, 1:1 crops, etc. and printed on a high resolution laser printer on acetate with extremely accurate results.

Chop using a paper cutter and fit into finder *on top* of focusing screen (avoids visual focus miscalibration).

Excellent Brad, that's perfect - perhaps you can share the files?
btw - I think one could order something like this from Leaf at one time.
