New - Old Group Exhibit in Belmont, MA
« on: January 26, 2013, 02:00:49 pm »

Hi all,

I'm a little slow announcing this, since the opening reception took place last night (it was well-attended.)

For those of you in or near the Boston, Massachusetts, area, I have 38 framed prints in a show with two other photographers, Elaine Fisher and A. David Wunsch, at the Belmont Gallery of Art in Belmont, MA. The three of us met at a workshop given by Minor White in 1966 and was have met from time to time for over forty years.

For more information about the exhibit, including location and hours, go to belmontgallery.org. For more in formation on the three photographers, click where it says "Click here for more information about this show" or go directly to http://www.belmontgallery.org/the-new-old-group/.

My part of the show includes tar drips, abstract rust, sandscapes, and a few classics from film days.

Cheers,

Eric Myrvaagnes

You appear to be keeping very good company there Eric.  I wish each of you many red dots.

And I am green with envy that you encountered Minor White — I am reading an anthology of his work at Aperture at present.  It is so hard to find a breadth of material about this quiet achiever.

Cheers,

W

Thanks, Walter, Slobodan, and Jeremy!

In fact I garnered three red dots yesterday already.   :D

Minor was an amazing teacher and mentor. He also gave print space in the early years of Aperture to many extraordinary photographers, not just his pals Ansel and Edward, but Bruce Davidson, Jerry Uelsmann, Clarence John Laughlin, and many others.

Cheers,

Eric

Thanks Russ and David.

When the show is about to close, I will try to put my part of it up on my website.

Cheers,

This is wonderful news! Seeing that it is the three of you makes it all that much better. Do you remember how he would lay out prints so that the story in between them fed the emanations from all. Neat that yours should all be shown together!
Were you part of one of the Arlington sessions? I'll bet we passed in the night so to speak. I have a notebook from that period and have some simple "koans" from it that are well worn in my gear bag. I finally broke down and put them in protective coating and often just "absorb" them while watching the changing light and inhaling the surroundings. I was about to pose a question about the emotional effect of space in framing of the (for lack of another description) "otherly lanscapes" over on "Critique" where I had put up one of those I've been working at lately alongshore.

Having just gone through my notebook, I think I should properly ask the question of myself instead. I know the kind of photography I am doing is not very inspiring or even that well received by most but just maybe I have finally attained an age where I should give myself of the gift of saying that it should not be part of the equation...tough to break old habits.

On Monhegan Island the same year as the Arlington workshops Minor was working out what he called "the psychology of feeling".  That is what your photography has always represented to me. Wonderful stuff! In Minor's words (1966) ,"... a little drama of dreams with a memory..."  ...this when he was sorting sequences, of camera, eye, memory, in front of, behind.

Anyway...just absolutely great news Eric! How long will the show be up?...skoosie! I'll check out the link.

Thanks for the kind words, Patricia.

The show is up through Sunday, February 24, and the gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 4 pm and SUnday afternoons from 1 to 4.

Yes, the "Old Group" started at Minor's house in Arlington, and eventually started meeting at members homes. Minor came to meetings often the first couple of years, and he even put up an exhibit at the Armory at M.I.T. called "The New Group," and thre present three were all in that show; hence the name "The New/Old Group" for this exhibit.

I was asked by Minor to take the "official" workshop notes for the 1966 workshop and then for his "Six Weekends" workshop in 1967. I still go back to those notes and find new inspirations from time to time.

You must have been looking at my website! The "Truth" wagon heads the somewhat whimsical "Consequences" series. I haven't actually put that in a show yet,
but thanks for noticing it.
