media type settings
« on: January 18, 2013, 02:08:44 pm »

Watching the LuLa videos for Camera to Print and Screen I saw an option for media type in the print settings of an epson printer that showed media type 'Cold press natural' I do not have that option when printing on my epson 3880, I re read the manual and I should.

My fine art media type options are only velvet, watercolor and ultrasmooth, any ideas ?

Make certain that you have updated your driver to one that includes CPNW and the others in the series. If it does not offer these choices Ultrasmooth Fine Art Paper, Paper Thickness of 5 and Platen Gap to Auto.

The EU drivers do not show the Hot/Cold Press papers.
And if you load the ICC profiles for those papers from the EU sever for those papers, there is a PDF that tells you what paper setting to use instead.
I've just been through that process.

Afx, hi

Having done a lot of reading I know I need to set LR to managed by printer and the chan for example ABW icc's will not work. I do have a icc for cold press natural but using ABW mode I cannot set the media type to the correct setting and use velvet fine art as a compromise. Interesting if the icc when managing colour outside the printer overwrites the menus type settings if I understand the above, but that does unfortunately not help me in ABW mode

Am I misunderstanding your comment on profile ?

My workflow is DNG to Lr4 then to epson 3880 I don't use photoshop by the way.

To clear up the confusion, ABW profiles can be created for WinOS but not AppleOS machines.  The only way to do this is to use Roy Harrington's QTR software.  This helps to linearize the B/W curve and the effect is very subtle.  The Epson color profiles have no effect on this at all.  This still does not solve your problem in terms of selecting the media type.  Why Epson do not supply this on their ex-US website (you don't say where you downloaded the new driver package from) is beyond me.  Perhaps an e-mail to Epson support is in order.  When the driver update came out in the US, I downloaded it and it contained all the current Epson paper type settings.

Even more curious, I downloaded from the UK site, the file name and driver detail is identical from the US site. So they are now seemingly loading the same driver v8.64

The UK site has version 9.04 and 8.64, I downloaded 9.04 then 8.64 my driver says version 8.64 but in the detail of the printer utility it says 'Version 8.64 (9.04)'

Either way the site points to the same software on the same web page, I might uninstall and reinstall

It must be an AppleOS issue then since I'm on Win7 and my driver is 6.60 and it includes the new Epson hot and cold press papers as separate selections.

Still no joy here, my repsonse from Epson was to use ultrasmooth fine art and a cold press icc....... I did say I was using the ABW driver...

For the Natural versions you could check what Papergraphics and Sihl provide in profiles and media setting instructions for respectively Papergraphics Smooth Fine Art 310gsm and Sihl 4852 Masterclass Smooth Matte Cotton 320gsm + the 4853 Textured version.

Some media options change based on the paper feed path you select. I'm pretty sure the ho/cold press papers need to be loaded in the rear or front manual feed slot. Change the paper path in the driver and see if you can select the additional media types.
