Please explain !!! Had there been long rain, then cold? Night heavy freeze after thawing afternoon...absolutely still night...Curious, I'm the cat about to die!

Please do. I've never seen anything quite like it.

Thanks. I'll look for "needle ice" if we ever get a real winter here in Massachusetts.

Huh.  Learn something new every day.  I can quit for today.  I've been around tons of ice and metres of snow, but never seen this phenomenon.

Thanks for sharing!

This is also very new to me. I imagined a lot of things before you linked the explanation. Thanks!

Me neither. That link makes it sound like the weather for this is more suitable in NW Europe.

Thanks for technical explanations, also called "Needles of Ice Growing on Wood".

I will add that the phenomenon is rather seldom and located in some well orientated valleys.
More, those crystals are especially growing on some kind of wood, preferably without bark.
And yes, a lot of rain before a night freeze, but not especially heavy.

More here http://my.ilstu.edu/~jrcarter/ice/wood/

The first time I noticed that phenomenon was in 2005.

But crystals are reallly nice this year ;)

Yes, that seems like a great camera for occasional bird shots.

But don't expect miracles, it's a small sensor camera !

Just do the sharpening with larger radius than usual, about 2 pix seems to work well.
