Quite. Scotland has both the most beautiful, mystical landscape, at least in the north west, and one of the most parasitic societies as far as the urban, repeat urban, population goes - largely dependent on the bribes of Labour and the SNP. Independence would be great if it makes them stand on their own two feet. We English would be well shot of the Scotocracy - eg Blair, Cook and Brown simultaneously running the UK government.  It's all very Quebecish.

Nope; you might get rid of the looney left, but to exclude the real Scots brains from London would be suicidal.

Vive Québec, vive Québec Libre! as one Charles de G was wont to declare at the most inopportune moments. But would even Canada be better off without them?

I'd rather be rid of the raving right. You know, people like Bliar (sic) & his New <hawk, spit> Labouristas. Neo-liberal entry-ists is what they are.

Come back Dave Nellist, all is forgiven.

Not much love lost then when Scotland votes for independence. Reading the posts here I gather it is about the choice between American style London centered politics or a European style social-democracy.

Well we wouldn't have had nearly 2% growth when Labour left office in 2010. Where did that go BTW?

David Cameron? However a plague on both of them. Do you wish to hold onto the oil when you get rid of Scotland?

A little out of date with your list of rogues? One dead, another out of office and wandering the world as a peace envoy and the other just wandering. ;D

The nice thing about Dave Nellist is that he wasn't on the make. He took only 40% of his salary (equivalent to the wage of a skilled factory worker), donating the rest to charity & the Labour movement. Nice to have someone not in it for the money & power, and we could do with more with his principles, whatever their political leanings.

I was critical in my mind as I watched a story about it - UNTIL, they panned over to her standing next to it - the guy did an outstanding job, it really does look just like her.

Exactly! That's the looney party for you. Those two were just playing 'my turn your turn' with one another at our expense.

What 2% growth? We were in debt to our bloody eye balls when those two clowns were hoofed out and still haven't managed to clear it. Maggie left a vast improvement behind her and look how that was butchered by those of her own and then the rest! The only good thing to say about Blair is that he was at least big enough to voice his admiration of her achievements. Of course, that did him little good with the faithfull followers of the reddish, eastern glow. Oh well, at least I think he managed to raise his portfolio to five houses - better than I ever did - one was more than enough!

But hey, this is pointless: nobody ever changes their mind about anything so basic and visceral. What's the use of just getting to dislike one another for things beyond the photographic?

On the point regarding Scottish independence:

When my friends south of the border ask me which way I will vote on this subject now that I am eligible to do so, I always say that as I am a newcomer to this wonderful land, I am more than happy go with the flow, or possibly not vote at all, as I do not feel entitled to select anything other than what the indigenous people would wish for themselves - and now having discussed this very topic with quite a few of the locals, not one person has yet said to me that they would be voting for independence. This might just be a local preference of course.

More likely it's the reality: there's a lot of mileage in creating worry amongst the pigeons - feathers fly and droppings fall, in this case, as cash into the press's coffers and, worst-case scenario, the open hands of the politicos and flag makers!

The Scots were always considered a canny lot; do they follow the lemming so easily? I think not. I hope not.

Also, Dave, I share your point of view regarding elections in 'foreign' parts: though eligible to vote in some elections here, I don't because, to be honest, the local politics are too far beyond me and my concerns are not those of the general, native Mallorquin who needs much more from, and puts much more into the system than do I. Like most expats, I lead a separate life whilst being in the middle of the common fold. To get along well and not make enemies is task enough and more than sufficient for any self-imposed 'guest'.
