Just over $3,000 in total prizes, and $35 entry fee per picture. So as long as they get 100 entries, they make money.

And from the rules: By participating, ALL ENTRANTS grant the Sponsors and their designees, licensees or affiliates (the "Authorized Parties") a non-exclusive, worldwide license, through December 24, 2014, to reproduce, distribute, display and post the entries online so that viewers may view all competing entries.

I think we've got the perfect solution to the issue raised in another post on this blog - what should professional photographers worried about the competition from amateurs do? Answer: Arrange photo lotteries competitions in which the amateurs pay good money.
