Epson 3880 Printer and Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion 64-bit
« on: December 23, 2012, 06:21:07 am »

Greetings...

I am thinking about buying an Epson 3880, but am concerned about possible 'interfacing' problems / difficulties with a recently purchased Mac Mini with 10.8 Mountain Lion 64-bit Operating System (since the 3880 is an already "older" model).

I called Epson last week, and was told there would be no problem with the 3880 being connected to and functioning correctly with this most recent MAC OS.

I would prefer, however, to hear from people on this forum... Anyone with experience in using this particular set-up ?   Any problems ?

Thanks for any insights...  Hencha

Hi,
I'm using an old 3800 with Macs running Mountain Lion. The printer is connected via Ethernet. I didn't experience any ML related issue. Just be sure to download the latest drivers from Epson's web site.

I've been using an Epson 3880 for some time now and did initially have a few problems with my Mac Pro (2009) after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  Despite having first installed the latest Mountain Lion compatible driver, Lightroom couldn't find my Epson 3880 printer.  However, after deleting the printer in System Preferences (Print&Scan) and re-booting the Mac Pro, I simply re-installed the Epson 3880 and Lightroom quickly 'found' the new printer.  Since then, it's been clear sailing.  I've had no incompatibility problems whatsoever.

Best of luck (and Merry Christmas!),

My 3880, Mac Pro, and Mountain Lion are all running very happily together. No issues at all.

Many thanks to all who replied; your information is good news to me.

I am in the process of deciding whether it will be the 3880 or the 4900, although, for my needs, it is looking more like the 3880.

I have been running mountain Lion and 3880 (via network) with no problems. By the way, my old 3880 died and I just replaced it with another one. Like you, I was also thinking about getting 4900 this time. The faster printing, larger gamut as well as cheaper cost per ml of ink looked appealing. But some users that own both 3880 and 4900 said that it is hard for them to tell if the print comes from one or the other. Someone also mentioned that 4900 is more susceptible to clogging... Then I looked closely at the size of the 4900, realized how big it is compared to the 3880 and finally decided to get 3880 again.

The major differences between the 3880 and 4900 are:
3880
80 ml inks
3 feeders (no roll holder) front, back and top.
50 lbs and easy enough for 1 person to carry
Doesn't handle thick fine art papers (370gsm and up) without hand feeding the paper until it hits the rollers to print.
updated teflon print head

4900
200 ml inks
roll feed, cassette feed and manual sheet feed.
140 lbs (about 2+ to move the printer)
updated print head

We have both printers in our office and so far no issues with either.  I've heard some people having a certain color clogged, but after a few cleanings, it was fixed.  Both printers should have no problems connecting to Mac OS's, but Epson does recommend you download the drivers from their site to have it read properly vs the CD (which works better with Windows installation).

So, basically what others are stating about the connection is correct.  We even have a Mac computer linked up to the 4900, 3880 and a few other models (like Canon IPF8300 and 650).

I have been searching the forums for advice on choosing a printer and I found it was easy to decide upon an Epson 3880 thanks to the reviews and experiences of the members.

I thought I would in turn contribute as my first post. As this elementary, troubleshooting 101 tip is not to be found on the board.  I was having trouble in system prefs, the printer showed up on the network, but continually advised that Apple did not supply the drivers.

I am running OS 10.8, Mountain Lion and was not able to install at first. Or, so I thought.  A long evening was spent of various strategies, frustration and various downloads suggested on the board.  In the end after installing the Epson install package (from epson.ca for 10.8), I should have just restarted the computer.  La Voila.  Works fine, first print from LR worked.

The trick was to restart the computer.  Which is odd for Mac, but none the less - problem solved.
