Nikon files patent for 35mm digital backs.

Nikon files patent for 35mm digital backs.

Why am I posting this here?  Well this makes a digital stitch back based on a D800e type sensor for medium format backs
a real possibility. Even a 4 shot digital back for 6x7 and 6x8 cameras.

This would be a great option for landscape photographers, product photographers and more.

Even more important being that it is a digital back application it would be self contained electronics so not like trying to pull a sensor out of a D800.

Also just think of all the hypsters going around with Nikon F cameras with a digiback on it.

Something is nagging away at the back of my brain regarding this.

I'm sure Nikon are not the first company to announce something like this.

There has already been add-on digital backs for SLRs, even one from Leica. Those times passed 10 years ago.

Nikon is not patenting a digital back, but some adjustment systems for precise sensor placement in existing 135 film cameras.

I doubt if anything comes out of this in the end. Back alone would end up costing more than a decent DSLR and would be clumsy and heavy. Not worth it, but patenting things is comparatively cheap.
