I haven't tried this yet and before I update my Drobo Dashboard Software or firmware I want to finish copying off the most important folders and files on to a  new 12TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2 RAId array (set up for RAID 5)  but in the meantime wanted to share these tips. I am kind surprised/baffled/bemused/miffed  that it is now Decemebr and that Drobo's programs are still not Gatekeeper certified.

Here's another tip I learned the hardway: If you have to shut your computer down  give the Drobo units plenty of time to finish doign their internal housekeeping File structure work before cutting the power to them. If you don't this could be a factor in the File structure problems resulting in  a "bricked" Drobo. I know Scott Kelby famously  had  a lot of problems with his Drobo units earlier this year ( http://scottkelby.com/2012/im-done-with-drobo/ and http://scottkelby.com/2012/my-life-after-drobo/) But Scott is based in the Tampa, FL area and when I lived there in 2004-2006 at least there are a lot of AC power issues there with the grid there.Switching  to the heaviest duty UPS+surge protection units I could find helped.

I have two Drobos, one is "bricked" but it was a newer backup unit but the older one is still running fine after 5 or years and multiple capacity upgrades.

Interesting stuff, Ellis.
I never managed to get my hands on a Drobo here. They were priced way beyond sanity around here and most of customers moved to other brands with better prices and better local support.
