3800 maintenance cartridge

I'm told that the cartridge on my 3800 is very nearly full, so I've bought another. Can I treat it as I would treat an almost-empty ink cartridge, that is continue printing until the printer stops, change it and carry on? I note that the instructions suggest that the printer should be switched off to change the maintenance cartridge, which made me wonder.
