new Epson natural canvas products
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:38:03 am »

Epson announced in October during Photokina about new Canvas products ( OBA free and about 19 ml in thickness) coming out in November and Dec. Has anybody heard any more news about these products?
Thanks

Only that the part number for the 44" roll of the gloss is S045400, and it's called Epson "Exhibition Canvas Gloss (or Satin or Matte) Natural."

It's also said to be very bright, acid free, and OBA free.

But best of all, the ridiculous, curlicious 22mil substrate on the current Exhibition Canvas Gloss goes down to a more flexible 19mil, HOORAY!  I just pray it's not being manufactured at the same out of control production facility now used for too many current canvases from too many different manufacturers. Sorry, that was just too snarky!

IT Supplies lists it as out of stock, and there are otherwise darned few google hits on it.  My favorite suppliers Inkjetart and Lexjet have no mention of it on their sites, neither does DTGWeb.  Nothing about it anywhere I can find on the Epson products site, but there is this 2 month old press release on the Epson publicity site.

Has anybody seen it?  Would love to know what the texture is like.  That stuff could be my new baby.

Wait!  Does "Natural" mean it will have lots of "seeds?"  Perish the thought!

ITSupplies has the new natural canvas in stock now (except for a few sizes). No discount though, selling at full list price.

Not a real product, IMHO, if one wants to make "availability" a criteria for "real."  I got really frosted about good-but-unavailable canvases this last spring, then really frosted again by major, slip-streamed, back-to-back changes in what little supply was actually coming through.  I felt like I was paying to be a lab rat.  Will take another look at "Natural" in 2014.

New Year's resolution: Never select a media product unless it is in-stock and discounted at 5 or more major suppliers.

To at least Epson's credit, Exhibition Gloss Canvas has finally settled down to a good, consistent product.  But too much OBA, which is very reactive to fluorescent light in an un-pretty way.  I wish they had gone the other way with that, which I guess they have with Natural.  Sure would like to see at least a surface swatch.

IT Supplies has 1 size on the Glossy, about 2 sizes in the Matte and 4 sizes in the Satin available.  Some of the sizes available have (add to cart for lower price), which are selling at a discount price.  Others are at regular price for the moment.

Hi Atlex!  Has Epson shared with you any information about their intentions for the Natural Canvas line?  Niche, mainline, OEM, whatever?  Looks like they also have some Natural art papers.  Anyway, thanks for the accurate and honest stock reporting on your site, that's the kind of stuff that matters to me as an online buyer.  When I need something, I want to know if it's really on the shelf.

I only looked at the Satin, didn't realize the availability for the matte/glossy was still limited, sorry. Still, it's a good sign that the stuff is starting to ship at least. I may try a roll of the natural satin (the EEC Glossy just has too much sparkle, my IPF refuses to create custom media type for it and scanning profile targets is also problematic).

Epson Exhibition Canvas Gloss dropped the kinky, super-sparkly surface quite a while ago.

It's now a "standard" canvas weave very similar to BC Crystalline, and not too far from Black Diamond Gloss, etc.  Pretty nice, actually.  Over my last several batches it has been trending towards a somewhat smoother weave and the edge curl problem that bedeviled it for so long has pretty much gone away.  If you can pick the box you buy, skip over the old blue/white labels and go for the newer, mostly black labels.  After I coat either Gloss or Satin with 3 light coats of GlamourII, they both look almost identically Satin-like.  Also switched to 2" cores which means a few extra feet of usable, un-rippled canvas.  Makes me think Epson does listen to user gripes.

Had no trouble creating an iPF8300 media type on the new stuff.  Profile scanning is still very tedious on uncoated EECG targets, but easy with gently coated targets.

Should mention that the 13"x20' "trial rolls" of EECG still seem to be the old stuff, based on feedback from somebody who just bought one.

That's what I was using to try it out before committing to a larger roll, good to know. I've actually got a 13" roll of the satin version to try out, thinking if the gamut isn't substantially worse it might be a good option to get around the issues I mentioned above.

Jeff, if by chance you decide to order some EECG for testing, it seems like the 24" and 44" rolls in distribution right now are the "new black-label stuff", but there are still quite a few 36" rolls of the "old blue-label stuff" out there which has IMHO excessive canvas texture, although not the pebbly-sparkly texture.  At least for the rolls I've been getting through Lexjet and Inkjetart.  So I'm dodging the 36's for now, that will probably sort itself out as that stock is depleted.  Should have mentioned this earlier.

I haven't heard about it until I saw it on the site.  I asked our tech and he gave me a bit of information (which I can't remember what he said since we were busy that day).  If you called or emailed us, we can find out from our tech on the differences for this version.

Thanks for the warning, I use the 36" rolls, haven't need 44" yet. I may just wait and try the natural canvas, since I'm not crazy about the amount of OBA's in the EEC anyways.
