Whenever I open a hardrive on my mac, on the left side of the drive's directory is a set of folders under "search for" The one that says "All Images". Where do these images come from and what is their purpose?

These are, not surprisingly, all images that reside on your drive. They might be your own images, but not necessarily so. The system and installed programs use gazillion images: icons, avatars, sample images, banners, etc.

What you're seeing is just a recent change in the OS. It's a 'feature' you may not need or want. If you had a NAS, or a server sharing drives it would be useful. I doubt those scenarios apply to you.
You can close/hide any of the categories in the sidebar by hovering your mouse just to the right of the title and clicking on Hide. You can also remove the icon for any drive that shows up by control clicking on it and selection Remove from sidebar.
