Which CompactFlash?
« on: November 16, 2012, 02:31:57 pm »

Hey guys!

I need to buy a new CompactFlash for my Canon 50D. But there are so many types, that I'm quite confuse.

Which one do you recomend?

KINGSTON 16GB CompactFlash Memory Card Ultimate 266x: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/590970-REG/Kingston_CF_16GB_U2_16GB_CompactFlash_Ultimate_266X.html
SANDISK 16GB CompactFlash Memory Card Extreme 400x UDMA: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/646867-REG/SanDisk_SDCFX_016G_A61_16GB_Extreme_CompactFlash_Memory.html
TRANSCEND 16GB CompactFlash Memory Card 400x UDMA: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/666606-REG/Transcend_TS16GCF400_16GB_400X_CompactFlash_UDMA.html

What is the real difference between the 266X and 400X? Is really that important?

For stills, nothing.  The only difference would be transfer time to the computer, or in a more recent body video recording.  Get the cheapest.

If you only have USB2, it doesn't really matter.  If you have USB3, see if you have the new internal headers on your motherboard, and then get a good internal unit that uses them like this one - I use it and it's excellent http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820223119

Hey guys!

I need to buy a new CompactFlash ....

Which one do you recomend?
Sandisk.

All Sandisk cards are reliable. The Extreme Pro, if you can afford them, are incredibly fast which means being able to shoot larger bursts of frames, faster reviews and faster transfers(assuming you've a decent reader, USB3 is ideal and even a cheap clone reader off eBay will show great results).

Just make sure you buy from a credible seller, avoid eBay etc, to avoid counterfeits.

You could have data at http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_wb_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9672 - he may have the time to publish it, or not.
From http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos50d/13 one can infer the camera can write to the card at up to 40MB/s, so a 266x card should do the job not more slowly as a faster one, if it does write at 266x.
Anyway, don't expect the difference beween 266x and 400x to be big, all other things equal.

I use Sandisc cards which have been very reliable over ten years.

One point, there is data recovery software available for Sandisc cards - and I have had cause to use it twice.  Would the same software work on other makes of cards, or do other manufacturers have their own software?  I don't know the answer, but a consideration.

All SanDisk here: 2, 4,  8 16, and 128GB. The 8,16 and 128 SanDisk Extreme Pros and IVs are what I mostly use now but  a few months ago I found one of my old 512MB  SanDisK CF's from 2001-2002. Still works fine.

I've had great experience with Sandisk flash memory products for over 15 years.  In 1994 I paid $1000 for a 40MB full size PCMCIA card.  The pain of being an early adopter.

The description of the Kingston say that it comes "with a bonus download for data recovery software from MediaRECOVER so you can recover lost or deleted files and restore corrupt files on Windows or Mac systems."  I am not familiar with the MediaRECOVER software, but when you need recovery software it's great to already have it on hand.

My best advice for buying any computer memory products is to never buy memory before you need it.  See above  ;D  Overall prices prices for memory are always going down.
What was a good price six months ago is too high a price today or six months from now.  There are exceptions such as the price of hard drives after the flooding in Thailand last year.

If you are not in a rush there will continue to be good sale prices between now and Christmas.
