Apple wants me to install new Printer Software
« on: November 11, 2012, 06:10:41 am »

I got a request from Software Update this morning to add "Epson Printer Software Update 2.12" to my Mac, so checked this forum to see what is suggested.

Found this statement  from Andrew in a previous discussion:

After you install the actual Epson stuff, you can tell System Preferences>Software Update to ignore any updates in the list which is what I’d do for anything Apple wants to install [....] never let Apple update any printer software in the future.

but can't find a way to tell Software Update to ignore these and not bother me with them again.

Am I missing something in System Prefs, or do I just need to live with Software Update constantly agitating to install this and future updates in perpetuity from here on in?

Thanks in anticipation

Jim

I have an 3800....   and two other epson small business printers.   As far as I know at this time
there is an update waiting for the 3800 on the european site  9.04
also updates like yours from the apple site

According to Epson all of the large  wide format printers (except for the 3000) are not affected by the downloads from apple.
Do I trust them?   No?    I have a problem at the moment with a piece of software and will be updating the 3800 when I finish the jobs at hand.

Then complete backup, then the apple update, test the business printers, then the 3800 update.

good luck...  Elo
backup, backup, and backup......   before you install anything and make sure it is a bootable backup...  you can then still get the job done....

In the Software Update app, under File is an 'Ignore Update' option.  So just select the Epson update and go select Ignore Update.

Overall, printer drivers are such a PITA that unless there is a reason to update them, I just let them be.  On my work Mac, I had defined printers under HP, Dell, Epson, Canon etc and as long as the driver works, I dont update (w/ the exception of my Epson 3800 which I manually update).

Thanks Elo and Howard

Elo : I hadn't seen the v9.04 (I'm still on v8.64), but I'll look into that later today - thanks!

Howard:
In the Software Update app, under File is an 'Ignore Update' option.  So just select the Epson update and go select Ignore Update.

I can't find this!

If I enter it via System Prefs, I get this (first attachment):

If I enter Software Update from the Apple menu, I get this (second attachment):

In neither case can I find an "Ignore Update" option, other than simply unchecking the tick-box

I guess I must be missing something pretty obvious here - any assistance gratefully acknowledged!!
