Nikon D800E battery life
« on: November 07, 2012, 11:42:57 am »

Trying to determine how many batteries to buy when I get my D800E. Any comments on it's battery life? Compared to the Canon 5D or 5D Mk II? How many shots do you get with, oh, moderate LCD use?

I can't comment on battery use compared to Canon, but the D800 is definitely battery-hungry.  I have three and I use the LCD moderately.  You'll need at least two.  If you're shooting all day long, you'll need three.

Hello,

As the batteries are no where as big as the ones in my Nikon D3x I have 3 batteries for my Nikon D800E and a fresh set of Eveready lithium's in the suppled Nikon AA battery holder.

Cheers

Had my D800 since March and have four batteries. For my travel shooting overseas, three is plenty.

I shoot 300-600 images a day with the D800 and another 300-400 with the D700. In each, the battery will easily go the distance and usually well into the next day.

My strategy for batteries is to have one on me in the field and a second in my big case as a back-up. Having four batteries on my last trip of four weeks was overkill I found. I just wish both cameras took the same battery & charger!

I have two batteries (D800), but have yet to need to switch during a day of landscape shooting.

Recently I shot 1600 frames, probably half were with VR, and still had battery left. Image review was off.

A few days ago I shot some product stuff using live view a lot and got through half a battery in 1.5hrs. LCD use is a big factor.

I get about 1400 frames before changing bats.  No live view, little chimping.

Shooting architecture/interiors, using lots of live view, I've gone through 3 batteries in a 1/2 day shoot.

Well, thanks. I'm a pokey landscape shooter and 100-150 shots is a good day for me. I'll start with two batteries on some day hikes and see how that goes. I'll monitor my LCD usage. I do tend to check the histogram frequently, so I'll start with my normal workflow and see what that gets me. I had four batteries for my Canon 5D and in a 600 shot week of backpacking never ran out of juice. That's my goal.

Hi Rob,

I should add to my post that I've set my D800 to display the image after shooting so I can chimp with a fast glance. Even set of time-lapse for 600-1200 images, I still have ample battery power with the D800. The big killer is when you do dark-field subtraction for long-exposure noise reduction.

Two batteries and 150-300 photos per day, a second battery may be all you need for now.
