Third party lens 45-55mm for Leica S2
« on: November 01, 2012, 01:26:09 pm »

Against my better judgement, I'm about to pull the trigger on either an S2 or S.
To keep it within a reasonable realm of affordability, the system will be rounded out with a couple of
third party lenses via adapters.
Primary use will be scenic imagery where apertures will often fall into the f11.5- f16.5 range.

Will be getting 30, 70, and 120 macro from Leica and round out with something in 45-55mm and probably a Mamiya 645 200 2.8apo

Need suggestions for a quality option in the 45-55mm range that won't get 'lost' on the S2 sensor.
I suppose it comes down to the Hass 50mm Mkll for H (but adapter alone is over $2K) or something 'vintage' from Mamiya 645 or Pentax 645
Pentax 67 and Hass V are also options but know very little about those system optics and their quality
The Metabones adapters I intend to use require an aperture ring to function as electronics aren't enabled so nothing current is an option

Thx for your opinions

The Mamiya 50mm shift might be an interesting solution ;)

Wasn't there a Zeiss 50 2.8 F lens for the Hass. V?  The old F4 C T* version stands up well to the 39mpx CFV39 back.  Should do fine on the S2.

First of all, I'm envious  ;D

Definitely get the M645 200/2.8 APO. Also, the 24mm ULD fisheye is an optical treat. I use both of these.

The 50/4 shift is said to be very good, but only from about f/8 down.

If you want something faster and sharper at wider stops, there have been 6 different M645 45/2.8 and 55/2.8 lenses (C, S, and N for each focal length). Of the three I've tried (45 C, 45 S, 55 N) the 45 S seems to be the best at or close to wide open, and like anything else, it gets better stopped down. I haven't shot a lot with it yet, but from what I've seen, I like its bokeh too.

One other thing - the S2/S is a compact, nimble camera, a lightweight (in the best sense of the word) as far as MFD goes.
So you'll probably want to pair it with light lenses, as far as possible.

The Hasselblad 50/2.8 weighs 1.0 - 1.2 kg (depending on the version).

The M645 45/2.8 and 55/2.8 wideangles are all under half of that - even the metal-barreled C and S types. The 55 N is the lightest, at just 305g! The 45 C is the heaviest, at 540g.

Heck, at 800g, even the 55-110/4.5 N zoom would be fun! Do Leica offer a zoom for the S yet?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Will do my homework with these in mind.

Ray. Leica announced a 30-90 at Photokina this year in addition to a 24mm.

Yes, the Mamiya 55-N is a really fantastic lens.  The 45AF lens, which I believe is the same optical formula as the 45-N MF lens, is great from about F4 on.  Really great at 8 or smaller.
