Electronic Copal Shutters: Do They Exist?
« on: October 29, 2012, 09:02:33 am »

Does anyone make practical electronic copal shutters.  I know Schneider has one on their website, but the fastest speed is 1/60s.  Or is this outdated information (Schneider does not seem to like to update its website).

Also, with any of the shutters, is it practical to shoot with them outside with no computer?  Or do you need to carry all the stuff with you regardless?

Rollei Electronic shutters go to 1/500th. I am kind of out this since I sold my Rollei X-Act2 with the digitars with Rollei Electronic shutter. The Rollei you could use outside without computer (though the batteries of my control unit did not last very long). I believe Sinar has an electronic system as well

You can use the Schneider via USB control with software loaded on your laptop.
Sinar has announced a new eShutter which features iPhone app for control. Not sure if it is shipping yet.

Rollei (DHW) has announced an updated e-shutter that can be operated via USB and I think these will go to 1/1000th.

The still available Horseman ISS was a Copal shutter with electronic timings and controller.
The shutter is rocksolid, built to last hundreds of thousands of exposures. I have used it for plenty of work, I still have it
in my "retired equipment" storage. I know of colleagues who use it for Multiseries/3D shootings and this thing is like a tank, it won´t break.
Highly recommended - probably the best shutter system ever built.

I've heard good things about the horseman shutters but they only go to 1/125th.   The Rollei electronic shutters have a mean time to failure over a million exposures and can be adjusted by 1/10th of a stop, and go to 1/500th.  They are very consistent as well and the reason why they are used in scientific and industrial applications.  I hope the new Rollei (DHW) shutters with USB control are even better.  The only flaw with the older rollei electronic shutters was that the Lens Control S was so big and cumbersome.
