Alpa 12TC and only one lens. Which would it be?
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:30:16 am »

First of all, this is my first post here so  I would like to say hello to everyone.

In the hypothetical situation where the Alpa 12 TC was the only camera available and you could only have one lens for it, which lens would it be and why?

For a loooonnnggg time, before I went for the S2 (and sold it :D), I wanted (and still want) an ALPA. If one day I return to MFDB, it will be Alpa (with Phase one back) and no other brand.

And if I go Alpa, my first lens will be either the ALPA HR Alpagon 5.6/90mm or the ALPA Apo-Helvetar 5.6/75 mm L. If no choice is possible I would go with the 75 mm.

Hope it help you a bit. If you want more info about the "why" of my choice, just ask.

Hi,

In that hypothetical case I would find out how to photograph the only allowed subject from the only available position and choose lens in accordance. Are you planning to move to Korea? North Korea that is? ;-)

Best regards
Erik

SK 47mm Digitar. Why? Sharp. Small. Low weight. Tad wide for my preferred focal, but because it is so it is simpler to zone focus. If found at good price used it makes for "affordable" to put into Alpa mount.

Should also work great on an STC.

Best regards,
Anders

(actually, SK47 is my choice for a future tech camera)

I use 3 lenses on my 12STC with IQ180: Rodenstock HR 35, 60 and 100mm lenses. If I only had one, I'd choose the 60mm and stitch for wider coverage.

Remember that the perspective of your chosen lens is slightly affected by the sensor dimensions, and you did not mention which sensor you'd use. With a smaller sensor dimension, I might go with the 35mm.

Thank you very much for the feedback guys, I do appreciate it.
If I were to use the camera it would be with a film 6x9 or 6x7 back.
Hulyss, I'm with Barbara, why?
What do you guys think about the angulon 5.8 58mm for a general one lens kit?
Would be zone focusing. Shooting in the urban environment, static subjects and maybe even some street.

Hulyss, I'm with Barbara, why?

Because Alpa is for me the most compact and all around MF set-up ever made, because 75 to 90 mm is standard focal, so the most all around, and because 75 to 90 mm are very well made and close to telecentrics.

And also because my guts said it to me ;)

I always follow my instinct.

I would look at digital lenses because they are sharper.

Req'd IC for 6x9 = 101mm

The newest SK 60 Digitar has IC=120mm. Another option is the Rod 55mm APO which has been stated by users to be a sharp lens for the APOs and has an IC=125mm.

Alternatively Rod 70 HR-W (IC=100mm) or SK 47 Digitar (IC = 113mm).

Of the four I mentioned above the 60mm will be most $$$ since newest lens. You could potentially find either of the other three on Ebay and then ask Alpa to put it into Alpa mount. It would save $$.  ;D

Suggest you to do some research on the lenses and on which one you find best suited.

Best regards,
Anders

The Alpa TC is definitely the most compact. But it lacks most of the advantages of a tech camera.

Both the Cambo RC400 and Arca Factum are nearly as compact and lightweight (and are smaller than the Alpa STC), and would add shift or rise/fall, stitching, and tilt without the need for a separate adapter. The Arca has, to me, a better viewfinder, and the Cambo, to me, has a better feel in the hand.

Obviously I'm biased - we used to sell Alpa but we stopped a while ago.
