How to copy a single brush from one version of CS to another
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:56:37 am »

I have created several custom brushes back in CS3.  I am trying to copy them to CS5, but when highlight the brush I want and hit save brushes, it saves the entire brush palette.
Is there not a way to save just a single brush?  Problem comes when I load back into CS5 I get a huge number of duplicates plus the one brush I want.
windows 7 environment

Thanks

Short answer is no, you can't save a single brush from a set of brushes. You have to delete the ones you don't want and save the resulting set. Brush management has always been poor in Photoshop, and a disappointment that no improvements have been made over the years of new versions.

Using a third party brush manager is a good idea if you have a large library. I recommend Tumasoft at http://www.tumasoft.com/.

With this program, you can browse thru a large library of brushes, select the ones you want as an "Export Set" and save the result as a new set. But the prime benefit of a brush manager program like Tumasoft is in finding the brush you want when you have a huge library. It let's you control the size of the "thumbnail" display so you can actually see the brushes, and browses thru folders and sets in a breeze.

I don't have cs3 here to check but you can certainly save a single brush in the newer versions from preset manager., I'm pretty sure it used to work before as well.

Thanks to both of you.  I always find it interesting the small things that seem to get left out.  I will will try the preset manager.  I have a few old signatures I am trying to move and so far I can only get them by copying all the brushes, and then deleting the duplicates.
