Lenses for 80MP backs
« on: September 08, 2012, 04:04:45 pm »

Are there any lenses for medium format cameras, especially hasselblad H bodies that are good enough for the high quality imaging(sharpness) with 80MP sensors, or are only lenses for technical cameras up to the task?

All my Rollei lenses are pretty sharp wide open on 80MP.

Yes, agree with Graham.  The modern rollei lenses are up to the job and some like the 90mm apo and 150mm apo will probably support even higher resolutions.  Probably the same is true for the H lenses and many of the other MF lenses.

A few jobs i've worked on in the past year (assistant), the photographer was using an iq180 on an rz67(which they previously used with film btw... Same lenses). Looked plenty damn sharp to me on the 30” monitor ;)

Eric is being modest.... he and I try to find holes in the lens lineup. I've only found an issue with a 55 PC lens at high levels of shift in the edges at 100%, but that's about it... They're fine for 80 mp. It is important to set each one up with focus offset (on the camera), dialed in for each lens.

There are other current MF lenses from other makers that are fine for 80 mp too.

Yeah, I think the concern about MF lenses not supporting the 80mp backs was a bit overblown - a bit of the sky is falling.    Going from 22 to 80 is really only just double the linear resolution in each direction.

Out of curiousity, I did a quick test shooting a line chart with my CF 528 which shoots a 22mp multishot file and a 88mp multishot file (in microstep mode).  The 88mp file got exactly double the number of line pairs that it got at 22 which to me at least indicated that there was no loss of resolving power of the lens going to 88mp and therefore I concluded the lens would support even more pixels.    This was with a 48x36mm chip so actually the AFi-ii 12 (same as IQ 180) at 53x41mm is not taxing the lenses as much since it has only 80mp with a larger area.

Some of the RZ lenses look quite good as well.  I have used my AFi-ii 7 on the RZ but not fitted my AFi-ii 12 yet so can't say how good, but a few seem to be very good.

Actually many older lenses are just fine. This whole thing about having to have the new "digital" lenses is overblown.

In my experience, scanning 6x7 Delta-100 negs from RZ 110mm F2.8 lens at 4000dpi gives 80MP sharp image.
Should work for the backs as well.
