You're not missing anything, your R3000 is supported by Apple (see list). If your printer is not in the list and the manufacturer doesn't offer drivers then CUPS/Gutenprint might be the solution.
The whole CUPS mention drove me off.
OS X uses CUPS as it's base print system, so it is no matter what it's a "supported" printer or a child of a lesser God.
Beside that I sleep well and maybe print even better :D

Beside that I sleep well and maybe print even better :D

Perhaps, you could improve and sleep while you dream of printing or the other way around…

the R3000 is considered as a business inkjet as are the 1900, 2880 and 2000  these four are the only business printers with drivers available from Apples see my other thread re Epson Support for Mountain Lion

When I installed Mountain Lion, Printer Utility 4 crashed everytime with my EpsonStylus Pro 9800, using the 8.64 driver.  I fixed the crash by finding the 9.04 driver on the European support site, and installing that.  No more crashes!  Hope this helps someone.
