Stockbridge by Night #1
« on: September 02, 2012, 04:54:28 pm »

Stockbridge is on the north side of Edinburgh. It has a mixture of 1960's brutalism, 1860's homes for the upper middle classes, and lots else. [about fives minutes walk from here is a rather pretty house where Thomas Carlyle lived for a time] I tend to be passing through at night on the way home from the pub. Possibly you think I oughtn't to shoot under the influence of alcohol...

Colin, you'll never match the U.S. shots of buildings; they never use curtains!

(There are exceptions, which probably prove the reasoning behind the rule!)

Indeed. When I do this, I usually avoid residential buildings. I really don't crave a drawn out explanation to the police of why I'm sneaking around the nurses dormitories late at night with a camera. I think there might be another practical difficulty. Pictures like this are necessarily rather long exposures on my camera. When I do include people in night shots, I look for the folks leaning against bus stops for support. They're likely to hold still for the significant lengths of time I need. Someone involved in the business of actual living in their house might well be moving rather too fast for my shutter.

Oh, and thanks to Russ and Walter for their kind words.
