Porter. Huangshan, China. October, 2005

I don't often comment on Michael's photos on the home page, but this current one really gets to me. There's a subtlety which diminishes the ardour of the porter, through the mist, and a beautiful framing of branches in the top right of the scene. Fantastic image, in my opinion.

+1 to Ray's comment.  This is really a good example of being in the right place at the right time and I would welcome Michael's comments about how he did this (and I assume that luck had very little role to play here ;)).

We stayed at a mountain lodge and got up before dawn (of course). It was extremely foggy.

We saw this porter coming towards us along the trial, through the fog, but as raised my camera to take a shot he scowled and shook his head. He did not want his picture taken. Ok. No problem.

After he passed us though I took a few frames of him receding into the mist, which worked out much better than what I originally had in mind.
