The first Android camera
« on: August 22, 2012, 04:28:49 am »

More than still+video, the real convergence that is going to impact all photographers is the merge between mobile devices.

Smart phones have come closer to cameras, but the main value is in fact in the ability to process images in device, more than the ability to call with a camera.

This is why I believe that the first Android camera just announced today is an important milestone for camera manufacturers. They seemingly started to realize what users want...

Wish they had put a cell phone in it
The real convenience would be a pocket camera of good quality and a smartphone, one device, one charger, one case

tethering to a phone could be better for "mobile connectivity"

Maybe Wi-Fi tethering to the phone that almost every buyer of this camera is already carrying would save on cost and bulk: avoiding the needs for both cell phone radio hardware in the camera and another data plan. (I doubt that the form-factor of a camera like this is conducive to people using it as their primary phone.)

And those of us with saintly patience can wait till we get to a Wi-Fi equipped home, office, hotel, or cafe to get our blogging or Facebook posting fix.

P. S. After reading Thom Hogan's astute commentary I think that, unless such a camera is capable of fully replacing a smart phone, a lot of us would be happier with a camera that simply offers easy wireless transfer to the "computer" we are carrying anyway, be it something with a newer, better version of Android and better hardware, or an iPhone, Windows Phone, iPad, laptop ...
