Matting decisions

Mat covers all four edges with signature on mat (and on photo but not showing).

Mat is approx. 1/4" outside of image edges with a wider margin at the bottom allowing the signature to show.

Different strokes for different folks, but I'm curious about what style other Lu-La forum contributors use for matting. No doubt everyone signs their photographs somewhere, but does anyone consider one way to be "more correct/acceptable" than another?

Signing the matte results in a signed matte.

Failing to sign the print results in an unsigned print.

We get used to both, desensitized, and then discover it's all too late, that we are now nothing but plusses and minuses with a few numbers thrown in to relieve the monotony just enough to avoid self-cancellation.

Another thing to think about...

If you sign the mat and it gets damaged after it is sold, then the person who bought it has to get the mat replaced and there goes your signature.

Go ahead and sign the mat if you want but ALWAYS sign the print SOMEWHERE!

That is the only rule I consider inviolate.
Anything else is up to your personal whims.

Another option is the signature on the print but not visible. Regardless, as a framer I believe it is critical to always have the photo signed. Especially if you sell your work matted but not framed. If your customer takes it to a frame shop the mat may be discarded for various reasons.

If you do not sign  somewhere on the art itself it becomes just an open edition
