I believe Leaf backs require 12w and P1 10w though P1's might work as you can run from battery while tethered.  No clue on Hassie and others

I ordered one for my retina MBP and credo 60 (leaf). It will probably run from the battery but if you want you can remind me in a week for results. It has a 5-7 day delivery time.

Just got the Apple Firewire to thunderbolt cable.
Good news for people with a digital back with internal battery... my Leaf Credo works flawless.... although it did not worked straight away, it works with slow loading battery or non loading.

Most important thing however is that it works. When working in the field I will have my loading off anyway.

I have one of the adapters in hand and an Aptus II, P+, IQ, and Credo to test it with. I will be testing on a MacBook Air (only thunderbolt available today).

If anyone in NYC wants to stop by our office (35 West 35th) with their back/computer to do similar test just call my cell 740-707-2183.

Still testing, but initial results with a Credo 80 and IQ180 conforms to yours: works perfectly, but you must manually tell the back not to recharge battery.

Our first pass did not work on "slow" battery charging - only "off", but that could have been a snaffu. We'll run the test several more times to be sure.

Seems like it might be a smidgen slower. We'll do some speed testing to confirm/deny/quantify.

We have now posted our extensive preliminary review.

The executive summary reads: The results are preliminary but Phase One IQ, P+, and Mamiya Leaf Credo backs work with a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter - but only after changing a power setting in the menu of the digital back. Also, there is some concern about extended rapid shooting, and the adapter is still quite new, so like any change to the core of your workflow, make sure to test extensively before using in production.

Naturally the executive summary is not comprehensive, so if it's important to your workflow I advise you read the entire article: Thunderbolt Adapter Testing of Phase One and Leaf Digital Backs.

FWIW: it works flawlessly for me.

- MacBook Air 13" (2011)
- Phase One P25+ back (on a Hasselblad H1)
- Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter (Apple), Moshi FW800 to FW400 adapter (both ordered from the online Apple store).
- Set tethered power source to "battery", as mentioned above.

Anyone able to test with an older Leaf back to confirm it won't work?  I have a Leaf Aptus II 22.

To bring this topic up again:
I would really be interested to hear if the adapter works with older backs. I would love to get the Retina MacBook Pro, but only if I can run it with my Aptus 22. So, if anyone has a chance to try it... PLEASE!
Firewire Repeater would be fine for me. Maybe it is even possible to split the firewire-cable up to feed the power separately?
Waiting for answers...

To use Thunderbolt with Leaf Aptus Backs you will need to use a Powered Firewire Repeater similar to this:

it works very well with the Hasselblad H4D. I have done several shoots sofar, some of them were 1000+ shots a day. No issues. actually I remember a discussion we had some years ago about being able to shoot continuously. It seems it is finally here... I can shoot and the images come in about as fast as I can shoot.

I'd be very interested to hear about that as well.
It seems like all reports so far are about DBs which use a battery (?) .

My Leaf is the old Aptus 75, no batteries possible for tethered shooting , FW400 .

Tethering works well with a MacBook Pro up to 5m FW cable length (not with a repeater , powered or not) .

I am running my Aptus 5 back connected to a MacAir with a Thunderbolt F/W adapter and powered F/W hub.

You can use a powered FW800 repeater and a 400-800 cable with an older Aptus

Thank you !

To summarize : the MBA with Thunderbolt adapter will only drive a DB if there is an additional power source, be it a battery in the back or a powered FW repeater/hub .
Correct ?

Yes, the repeater can also be powered from a 12V battery
