Useful optical finder in MF-RF?
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:46:17 pm »

I can't get used to EVF, probably won't for a long time. I tried several RFs, including GX-1, G12,  X100 and X10.  none of them are useful for MF. While X100 and X10 claimed they have the first dual RF in the world, that's actually just a market gimmick.
The only acceptable optical finders for MF are still SLR and Leica M,..., and they are century old stuffs.    Is it really that hard to make?

Put the X100 in MF mode.  Set the AFL-AEL for AFL only where it locks when you press the button.  To focus use the AF lock button to put you in the general area and then fine tune with the focusing ring.  I use the blue scale with white band to preset depth of field this way since the white band tells you what is in focus.
For just manual focus you have to use the EVF for this approach.  Only the Leica m has rangefinder focus.

Have you looked at the Fuji X-pro1?  While not a true 'rangefinder' the OVF on that camera is rangefinder style.  Many are pleased with it.
However if you characterize the X100 viewfinder as a gimmick you will likely not be satisfied.
Leica makes fine cameras, why not get one of those?
