Have searched the web for hours without success.  A burr under my saddle.

It looks like some type of hibiscus. Possibly a Fleming Hardy Hibiscus.

Or a White Hardy Hibiscus.

Or it could just be a wild hibiscus.

Thanks, a great relief.  If it's not wild, it's at least feral, growing all around the verge of the reservoir where I live.

Addendum:  amazing how easy it is to find info on this plant if someone has already told you its name.

Grows wild on swampy ground from Florida to Massachusetts.

Yup, hibiscus alright.  Not to be confused with the Oyama magnolia.  Invasive plants often (not always but often) start as escapees from someone's garden, and with no natural predators it takes over ground and crowds out native plants.  Victoria is up to its armpits in ENGLISH ivy, HIMALAYAN blackberry SCOTCH broom (actually from Egypt) and JAPANESE spurge, to name a few.

If you took this in Canada or any place that is not a warm climate, it is likely "Roses of Sharon". Yes a hibiscus, but it is more commonly known as "Roses of Sharon".

Agree, Rose of Sharon bush. This is a common garden plant.
