How to make series of photos equally bright?
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:33:51 pm »

I shot a series of paintings under the same, controlled conditions, but under natural light, and due to slightly changing lighting conditions and vagaries in my camera, the photos have slightly different brightnesses.  How can I make the photos equally bright, i.e., as though they were exactly equally exposed?

I am NOT asking how to sync a given change in brightness (say, +10) to a set of photos.  Instead, what I'm asking is, I want a given reference patch of each photo to have the same luminance.  That might mean a brightness adjustment of +10 on one photo and -3 on another.

Is it possible to do this automatically and more accurately than by eyeball?

(Still using LR3, by the way.)

It's not perfect, but in Lightroom you might try Settings>Match Total Exposures.

It works pretty well.  You can see more here: http://www.wolfnowl.com/2010/10/match-total-exposures-in-lightroom/  The post was written for LR 3, but it still works.

Match Total Exposures works for me too. Sometimes, I get unexpected results but it's easy to try and decide if it works on the selected set of images.

Thanks all, that's what I was looking for.  It's not perfect, but it is a good starting point.
