Charles Rockey
« on: July 22, 2012, 01:10:31 pm »

I've known Charles since the early seventies. He's an artist who, for most of his life, refused to show or sell his art. He was a teacher for 25  years, so he could afford to keep what he produced. But in 2001 he finally had a huge show in the Manitou Springs Business of Art Center which was formed in 1986 with the help of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs donors. The show was an instant sellout.

Friday evening was the monthly Manitou Springs art walk. As my wife and I and two of my sons and their wives covered the town I had a chance to get a fairly unusual picture by shooting into Rockey's front room. The light was failing and the window on the street was full of reflections. Down the street, Charles sat on a bench talking to passers by. I shot about 8 frames as he was talking and though it's a long way from a great portrait, I liked this one best of the lot. Charles is two years younger than yours truly, but he has very severe osteoarthritis, and nowadays he's barely able to walk.

There's a great article on Rockey and the 2001 show at http://www.csindy.com/coloradosprings/the-rockey-road-to-art/Content?oid=1110602

Love them both.  He looks like he'd be an amazing man to talk with.

Russ, next time you chat with him, suggest a ponytail: I shed three years on discovering mine! Perhaps Ray's tuned in?
