Canon Image Stabilization problem?
« on: July 12, 2012, 04:12:18 pm »

I've owned this Canon 24-105 for years but I'm wondering if it needs service. All of a sudden, I notice that when IS is ON, it kind of shakes (up, down, sideways) and then settles. I can see shifting if that is the correct term, within the viewfinder. It never did this in the past. Anyone know if this is a sign the lens needs to go to Canon for a tune up? TIA.

Sounds like a trip to Canon to me, mine has never acted up like that.  It's a good idea anyways just for cleaning if the lens is well used.

I was afraid that be the case. I think it did visit Canon years ago but considering how much I use it, probably needs to go back. Thanks.

Living in Tokyo makes it easy, just drop it off at the canon service center and sometimes they fix it right then and there, sometimes the next day, first rate service. They have been kind enough to give me free camera cleanings, install aftermarket focusing screens etc. no charge.

I dropped a 70-200 2.8 IS onto asphalt last year. It had the exact symptoms you describe.
The repair was fairly costly unfortunately.

Hope you fair better.

The lens is on it’s way to Canon, thanks everyone. I guess I just needed the push.
