rMBP and 10bit output for Eizo monitor
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:26:50 pm »

I am going to buy a Eizo 275w monitor witch is able to receive 10 bit signal via its Display port for producing billions of color instead of millions of color of old DVI port. My question is if rMBP can supply Eizo with 10bit signal via its thunderbolt(mini display port)?

Yes...it "could" but Apple has not put in the pipeline for applications to send 10 bit to the display. Photoshop can send 10 bit to the display on Windows...but not Mac. Talk to Apple and tell them you want it...

Yep, it's Windows only right now. And even then you need to have a special workstation class video card.

Just out of interest, has this changed with Mountain Lion?

Please read Pete Meyer's article in LL about 2 years ago regarding Eizo monitor connected to his Mac Pro and he finally made it work so maybe Apple supports 10 bit just it is not documented properly:

Ali , Thanks much for that.  that was written back in July 2010. I assume then that if we have up to date Eizo firmware for our CG monitors we are working at 10 bits per channel color, correct?

His analysis was incorrect. On Mac, there is no full 10-bit path. As Jeff said, we’re waiting on Apple, the final piece of the puzzle missing. I have no idea if Mountain Lion changed anything, but there are ways of properly testing this, thanks to a file found here:
