Upgrade i1Photo Pro 1 to 2?
« on: June 29, 2012, 10:38:53 am »

I use the i1Photo Pro to profile non-OBA papers. For a limited time I can upgrade to version 2 utilizing a 20% discount offered by X-Rite. The new version looks more refined and improved, however my bottom line is will I see a difference in the gallery prints that I make on my Epson 7900 printer? Will there be a noticeable difference in the accuracy of the print match to the screen of my NEC PA271W (spectraview model). I understand that there will be an improvement if I decide in the future to use and profile OBA papers. But setting that consideration aside, is it worthwhile to upgrade to the new version 2 for profiling non-OBA papers(I have already upgraded the profiler software)?

I would appreciate any feedback from those who have experience with both units.

Disappointing not to see any helpful replies to this.

I think the answer is that you probably won't see any significant difference between instruments using the same software unless the older i1Pro has drifted out of spec.

I replaced my ipro 1 recently, and I must say it works like a charm.

What I especially like about it is that I can have more confidence in measurements. It's robust, easy to clean and has automatic wavelength calibration, so you can trust that it measures the color in a right and repeatable way.

It's also more thermal stable, and has less problems with dark current noise, so it is better for display/projector calibration (and BTW the display/beamer holders are also improved)

The measurement ruler is also much better, and the measurement is more convenient, and faster and more accurate - I virtually have no errors while scanning.

Last but not least - as a graphic designer I really appreciate new design - the case with the gear looks like million dollars.

Of course I'm not sure if you will see the difference (do you alredy have i1profiler software), but I'm sure you'll see difference in comfort of use.

Personally I can see the difference in quality of display calibration, and didn't had enough time to make extensive test of quality of printer profiles for my iPF6350 yet (but so far so good).

I doubt you’d see a visual difference. That’s a guess, I haven’t built two profiles with each instrument. If you measure the same data with each, they will produce slight dE differences. I do recall that early on, I found the new i1Pro-2 correlated a bit better to measurements off my iSis which is really only useful to someone like me who has to use both devices.

The bigger difference will be in having the new dual measurement capabilities, better ergonomics, targets that use smaller patches and the like. I doubt that aside from those advantages, you’d see anything remarkable on the print from the profiles.
