for all the ALPA lovers out there
« on: June 29, 2012, 10:33:26 am »

just received the newsletter, most interesting:

Photokina 2012: New products to come from ALPA

One more thing: We will show some completely new tools on our booth at Photokina 2012. The new items will be integrated into the existing ALPA 12 platform but going beyond: Broading the horizon but not replacing the proven. Stay tuned for our next newsletter in the run-up to the show in Cologne.

With Alpa updating their tilt-swing offerings it seems a good time to get an updated survey of the pancake Tilt Shift options out there.

Cambo Tilt and Swing:
- requires lens retrofit into TS mount
- widest Schneider: 43mm
- widest Rodenstock: 28mm
- tilt and swing can be applied simultaneously

Arca Tilt and Swing:
- built into body, every lens works without retrofit
- widest Schneider: 24mm (all)
- widest Rodenstock: 23mm (all)
- tilt, or swing, not both at the same time

Alpa Tilt and Swing:
- requires lens retrofit, and separate adapter
- widest Schneider: 60mm
- widest Rodenstock: 32mm
- tilt, or swing, not both at the same time

Feel free to make any corrections, or to add other pancake platforms to the list.

The new (future) Twin Circle Goniometer head seems to be fully inspired by the famous (and patented) Cube C1 of Arca-Swiss.

Twin axis goniometers have been around longer than the Cube. I doubt the Arca patents cover goniometers.

I guess Alpa ran into the problem that they didn't design the 12 system to incorporate Scheimpflug at first. Contrary to Arca's RM, which was built around it. Not that five degrees of swing/tilt is a lot, but most pancake camera users will hardly ever use more. Personally I've had an eye on the RM3di or its larger sibling for a while now and will most likely switch this fall. Maybe it is time for Alpa to come up with a new camera concept?

i guess the answer lies in here "Photokina 2012. The new items will be integrated into the existing ALPA 12 platform but going beyond: Broading the horizon but not replacing the proven."

In other words, Arca Swiss wins this one. And now, to quote a D-grade movie, let the mortal kombat begin.

Eh, that's the problem with simple lists to compare.  I don't want a camera as big as the Rm3d.  The 2d is smaller but there is no tilt.  So as soon as you add some other criteria that is important to you, the "list" changes dramatically.  The Cambo WRS would look like it is on top on my list.  But hey, that's not what I bought either!

I think this device will only be worth with 60-80mp high-end backs or with film, I work with a 36mm/P45+ on my Alpa 12max and this "lacking" scheimpflung option never bothered me at work unless we use it in a "creative" way...
