HP Z3100 warranty
« on: June 29, 2012, 09:57:19 am »

Purchased extended warranty for my 5year old Z3100 , after a bit of interrogation by tech support, a technician from HP replaced the formatter board and the main circuit board assembly, for anyone with a z3100 of advancing age, great deal. BTW I have a lot of expired ink cart's& print heads, printer works great now.

My Z3200ps Care Pack is expiring next month. I'm tossing up whether to risk not buying a new one. My fear of replacing the drive belt may be the thing that drives me into their avaricious arms.

We have a HPZ3100ps, of advancing age, but light use.

Some questions: did he just replace the formatter board and the main circuit board assembly for the heck of it or were there problems?  I had heard things about the hard drive getting flakey. Was that OK? And the belts? it was not replaced?

Did you pay an outrageous price for this? Could you say, roughly, how much you shelled out?

we love our Z and hope it keeps going for years. Just trying to get some ideas on what to do to keep it going.

thanks

You can do the belt replacement yourself. Not that difficult.

Considering a new z3200 44" can be had (in the U.S.) in the range of $2200 - $2800, depending on where and when you buy, you will have to balance the value of an extended warranty up against the cost of a brand new unit.

My z3100 is also 5 yrs. old now. For me, I just replaced the belt to keep it going. If something major fails, I would probably just buy a new printer and/or do the replacements myself on the old one.

Same here in all regards

I have just bought a new Z3200 after the Z3100 failed (and very erratic reliability) a couple weeks ago. Most likely the mainboard/formatter board. Over the last month or so I'd been experiencing a lot of system errors - many occasions a roll wouldn't feed in the rear - turning on and off sorted this out. Also I couldn't calibrate or generate new profiles for my canvas and matte papers - firmware issue?

Finally it came up with an 08.xx error. The printer wouldn't restart. Since I didn't have an extended maintenance warranty I decided to get the 3200. After I made the order (approx $9000US -11500NZ - ouch!) I tried the Z3100 one more time - it worked!

I had replaced the carriage belt myself in January and also the starwheel lifter motor mechanism the previous year. So I think I'm familiar with the workings of the machine. I'd been getting problems with colours not being quite right -it wasted a lot of my time correcting these. If I was able to do the board replacements at a reasonable price I may well have kept the Z3100 - it's been a great printer the last 5 1/2 years.

Saying that I like the 3200, apart from the loud cooling fan which stays on all the time! Also I think the reds do indeed look better than the Z3100 - usually not an issue in itself.

The Z3100 is supposed to be traded in with an HP $1500 rebate. If they don't take it I'll likely strip it for parts. In the end I needed guaranteed reliability - a new printer guarantees that to a major extent. RIP the Z3100.

My supplies dealer recommended the warranty, it seems that quite a few of these printers fail around their fifth birthday, I'm always amazed at their complexity, less than a grand a year seems like a good deal to me to keep it running. HP replaced the formatter board and the tech decided that the main board should be replaced as well. Peter

From where?

I researched and wrote about HP warranties here: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=62088.msg499607#msg499607

Didn't find a vendor who offered it for around $1K or under.

I'm guessing he means under $1,000 / yr. Looks like 1 year care pack extension will run you $800-$900 before any sales tax. So for 3 years of care pack one could buy a new z3200 that will also have at least 1 year of warranty coverage included, and if HP stays in that price point I'm a customer for life. Raise the price, and I'll be buying Canon ink carts, HP! :)  You can read through the z3100 / z3200 threads here and see most (virtually all) of the stuff where one actually would use the Care Pack are just replacing parts that one can do oneself with the service manual.

Re: HP Z3100 warranty--new ones don't seem to be $3000

I have just now looked around the web for those $3000 HP Z3200 44" printers.  I see them going for anywhere from $5000 to $6000.  What am I missing?  (I have a lightly used HPZ3100 ps 44" which is running nicely but might chuck it if I need a big part/repair if I could get a better replacement for $3000.  but they don't seem to be out there.)

thanks for any help.

Atlex had 44" z3200 ps for about $2500 last month. Almost got one, but just replaced my belt on my z3100 instead.

Last month, my gently and rarely used Z3100 started to develop problems. I've owned it since 2007.

They sent me a replacement formatter. The old one had an IDE hard drive. The new one has a SATA hard drive.

I installed it and with some telephone assistance, got the beast back up and running.

I have half a mind to temporarily remove the hard drive and to do a drive copy to another 2.5" SATA hard drive, in case (or rather for when) the hard drive crashes the next time.

Still happy with the output. All original print heads, I think I finally replaced the last of the original ink cartridges.
