LightRoom Cloud Library
« on: June 19, 2012, 02:21:13 pm »

Does anyone know of a way that a company could use a cloud library for storage of images, then each team member can have a catalog on their computer that can reference the library.
Note most of the images are small jpegs for web usage.
Thanks,
JP

Define "library". You can already put the pictures on a service like Dropbox, and "each team member can have a catalog on their computer that can reference the" same set of pictures.

Thanks,
Dropbox is a good idea.
When I say Library I mean all of the actual jpeg images, then each user will have their own catalog with their personal settings.
Currently they are grabbing their images from a shared picassa folder and then doing edits and exporting for web in Photoshop.
I think integrating Lightroom and Dropbox can save the team a lot of time.

Just remember that Lightroom catalogues cannot be on a network, but the pictures can be.

Yes,
We just need to share the images, not actual catalog or settings.

What I heard from Adobe yesterday is in a few months (2 is what they said) Adobe will launch its 'cloud' platform. It really looks stunning.

Did anyone actually managed to get the LR catalog working on Dropbox for team work or just two computer synchronization?
It should work but… does it work in practice?

I am running into some problems trying to get it integrated with dropbox.  Maybe somebody can give me some ideas on how to make this work.

Here is what we need.
- To be able to download stock jpegs to our library so that when any user opens lightroom, it auto imports any images downloaded by other users into their catalog.  None of the edits or metadata need to be shared, just the images themself.
Can anyone help.
It would also be nice for keywording to be shared, by each user saving their keywording to the metadata periodically.
Thanks

IF you could set up Dropbox as a 'Watch' folder in Lightroom (File/Auto Import/ Auto Import Settings) then everytime you open Lightroom it should open the Import window and let you know what images are new.  I know Google Drive shows up as a drive in the folder list but don't know about Dropbox.  As far as keywords, etc. you'd have to save the metadata out to the files and then they should be imported with the images.

By "cloud library" do you mean a central location on the company's intranet for image storage or do you mean the so-called "Cloud," an external service offering a server location on the internet where the images reside so that company assets can access them?  If the latter, IMHO "The Cloud" is an incredibly bad idea for anything except casual personal users with non-mission critical data having no monetary value.  In other words, it's fine for sharing pix of your kids birthday party with friends and family but for anything more serious than that, fugeddaboutit.

the problem I am having with a watch folder, is it moves the file from the watch folder to the users library, so the first person who accesses the auto import will remove the file for the other users.  Is there a way to copy the file on auto import, instead of move it.

Again here is our goal:
-Use a dropbox or Google Drive folder that when we buy stock jpegs we place them in this folder.

-Then when one of the three imaging people opens LightRoom (either at home or at the office) it copies the new images in the dropbox/drive folder to the library on their computer or LR accesses the images straight from the Dropbox/Drive folder.

Ideally every user will have a copy of the image that was downloaded and placed in the cloud by one user.

Please elaborate on what you mean with library. In the strict sense a lr library , the lrcat file, is just a database and holds no image files.

Sorry, I don't mean the ircat file.  I call that the catalog, maybe I am wrong.  All I am talking about is users autoimporting the same jpeg files from a cloud storage, without moving the files (just copying) so that all users will be prompted to autoimport the files that have been added to the cloud storage after purchase from stock agency.

The users don't need to share changes or anything from the files just the original file.

Thanks,

Any reason to not just set up your own server? You then have complete control over maintenance, security, backups, etc.

Remember, clouds are vapor. Seth Resnick relates a near disaster in the 'Where's My Pictures' tutorial.
