Mounting canvas - not gallery wrap
« on: June 18, 2012, 11:39:22 pm »

Hello All,
I would like to change things up for an up-coming show. Getting tired of the gallery wraps, they are everywhere now.
I am going to mount un-stretched canvas on gator board and place these in custom made, shaker style frames, without glazing. These will be large images (for me) 20 x 30.
Advice on adhesive and other mounting sub-straights would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would consider miracle muck.  Works great not expensive.  Only place I know to purchase it is Raphaels out of Califorina.

I've never used it but the answer is Miracle Muck. If you do a forum search you'll find at least one other thread where someone wanted to do the same thing and Miracle Muck was the common response.

MM with canvas on gatorboard is about as easy as it gets.
A more expensive option which requires a laminator is canvas on Dibond.
Mount your canvas to Dibond with print mount ultra or another similar product.  Flip it over and trim with a razor.
Mount the hanger of your choice to the back and your done.

I use heat-activated foamboard and a drymount press. Easy as can be and works well. No chance of getting a scrap of trimmed tissue caught between the canvas and the board!

A favorite hobby of mine is writing up how to mount canvas with Muck.  I have done it about 17 times on this forum alone!  Here is my most recent and least wordy summation...

Note the part about the initial curling, don't try to fix it because will flatten out nicely all by itself in a few hours.

You'll never go back to stretching.  Masonite works as good as Gatorfoam, except it's way the heck heavier and requires very careful hanging techniques for the larger pieces.

Thanks all -  Has anyone used Prefect Mount adhesive boards? A nearby supplier suggested it, but they do not know framing techniques very well.

Gator will easily fit in a standard frame, either wood or metal.  3/16 or 1/2 gator both will work.  Frame rabbet, should be 1/2" or more.  You don't need glass and depending on the piece/size
you can take a smallish or large frame.  Very nice way to finish out a canvas.  When framed you won't be able to tell if it's a canvas/gallery wrapped in the frame or a canvas on gator.

And a canvas on Gator will not result in customer complaints about sagging when the humidity goes up.

Best not to just hang a piece of Gator on the wall without some kind of protection.  The corners and sides are ultra-delicate and can be dented by the slightest bump.  For that kind of presentation you want to mount the print on something relatively resilient like Dibond with transfer adhesive.

But sometimes I use Gator for temporary signs, in which case I make a "U" shape out of moderately stiff hanging wire, then glue it upside down to the back of the Gator with a strip of canvas soaked in white glue or Miracle Muck.  Two of them are recommended on opposite sides of the Gator, you can adjust the shape of the U's to get a good level.  Takes a couple hours to dry and will stay in place pretty much until the end of time.
