Lightroom 4 Import Issue
« on: June 13, 2012, 04:37:18 am »

Currently I'm loading files to Lightroom 4. As we all know when you hit IMPORT and choose a folder all images are ticked. If I tick the uncheck all items box I can then import individual files.

Is there a way of rapidly choosing say 50 images rather than ticking each box.

Thanks

Select the ones you want to import and check the box of any one of them.

You're better off importing everything that's there - or just unticking obvious duds. Lightroom's Library has more tools and is a better place to evaluate images than the import dialog, and once they're in the catalogue they're under tighter control.

I hear what you say it's just the time aspect. Plus on occasion I have shot say three shoots onto one card, I might want all the images but prefer the shoots in three separate folders. Perhaps there's a way of loading them all to one folder then moving them afterwards in L4. If there is I'm not aware of that.

You can certainly move them afterwards - create new folders in the Folders panel and then drag the thumbnails.

If there is a group of sequential images, click the first, hold shift then click the last and they will all be highlighted. You can add or subtract from the selection by holding the "Ctrl" key and clicking images. If you then tick a box all selected ones will be ticked.

Might help

I can click the first then shift click the last in the sequence but ctrl won't remove a selection. I'm using a mac perhaps you mean this method for a PC.

Cmd on Mac.

But you're taking a risk doing this in Import. How will you ensure you import everything and don't forget some files on the card? How will you choose between two images? Follow my earlier advice ;)

That's right its "Ctrl" on a PC and as John says, its "Cmd" on a mac

Funny because CMD isn't doing anything on my Mac. In other words if I click the first file then shift click the last they all become higlighted (with ticks in the boxes). Holding down Cmd (the Apple Key) then clicking on an image just un-ticks all the boxes not one individual box.

Hold down command to toggle the selection state of a photograph, not of its individual box.

So, for example, to select only photos 3 to 10, 12 to 15 and 20 for import,

 - click "check none"
 - click on #3
 - shift-click on #15 (to select from #3 to #15 inclusive)
 - command-click on #11 (to deselect it)
 - command-click on #20 (to select it)
 - click on the checkbox of any of the selected photos (which will check the box for every selected photo)
 - import

Whether or not this is a good idea I leave to you to judge!
