Congratulations Brooks Jensen for LensWork 100
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:12:40 am »

I'm greatly enjoying LensWork 100 - congratulations to Brooks and his team on reaching this milestone. We as a photographic community are greatly enriched by the work Brooks does in editing and publishing what has come to be a seminal journal of photography. Everyone involved should be immensely proud of LensWork and the legacy it is creating.

If you are not familiar with LensWork and the LensWork Community, you must visit their sites:
LensWork.com - Undoubtedly, the pre-eminent journal of black and white photography, beautifully presented on quality stock.
LensWorkOnline.com - a subscription site with hundreds of "goodies" as well as the most recent LensWork issues as electronic downloads.

Thanks for the links. I'm not familiar with the publication. Do they do only/mostly B&W?

Brooks by his own admission, knows nothing about color, though I think that he does himself an injustice.

In terms of the print edition, yes all of the publications are warn toned B&W images and the printing is of the highest quality for a magazine.

In the Lenswork Extended editions on DVD or online, there are also color folios, which started about 3-4 years ago.

The print edition is wonderful to absorb each edition.

The printed issues are B&W only, of superb printing quality. The online version also has color.

LLers Chuck Kimmerle and Mitch Dobrowner have both had terrific spreads in LensWork.

IMHO, LensWork is the current best journal having to do with photographic art. Available by subscription only.

P.S. Peter beat me to this. He and Terry are absolutely right.

I'm with Eric on that one. From the standpoint of print quality, LensWork is the best there is. B&W is good, but their printing standards don't begin to come up to Brooks's. My only beef with LensWork is that Brooks doesn't understand street photography, as he readily admits in issue #97 for November-December. In that issue he published a series of twenty pictures by Stan Raucher, of which only two or three should have survived a cull. What made the situation worse was that Brooks published the recently discovered and superb street photography of Vivian Maier in the same issue, crushing Raucher's contribution. A shame, because Raucher isn't nearly as bad as he looked by comparison. The work by Chuck Kimmerle and Mitch Dobrowner was the kind of work Brooks understands, and both spreads were superb.
