Is this a safe place to shop cheap foto-gear?
« on: May 13, 2012, 02:39:48 am »

Found this place on the internet. They seem to have a lot of good prices, but I am very unsure.
They want payment with Western Union, but say secund time users can use Paypal.

It all seems strange. Does anyone have experiences with this site?

I haven't and I've no intention of acquiring any. The only reason which occurs to me for allowing customers to use a different, and more easily reversible, method of payment the second time they buy is that there will be no such time.

You might be lucky; but I'd sooner burn the cash. At least I'd get some warmth from it.

Please let us know how it went  ! :)

Maybe it is all not that genuine? On the other hand things can be a lot cheaper directly from china I suppose...

I doubt very seriously that they are not a rip off company.  But, I see that their 16gb CF cards are free with free shipping!  Nothing to lose on that one!.  But, seriously, a Canon 5D MKII with a 24-105mm IS Canon lens for $1399.00.  If it is too good to be true, it probably is not true.  Let us know how your first order goes.

I wouldn't buy anything from them. No serious business gives an IP address for its website!

Western Union payments are notorious in being associated with ripoffs. I wouldn't pay any business that only took WU (sure, the second time you buy from them you can PayPal, after they have scammed enough folks and moved on...heheheh, great deal that would end up being).

Honestly I can't believe you'd even consider it.
- IP address rather than domain name
- header graphic is a stock image that is very stretched out
- the english in the FAQ and other pages is very poorly written
- requires payment through western union... REALLY??

There is some chance that this place is not a straight-up scam. But there is near zero chance they are a reliable, professional, customer-oriented business you can trust with your money. Even, assuming the best, they are a legit business - can you imagine them standing behind the sale if something goes wrong (e.g. courier drops package, there is a mixup in which part ships, lens is found to be a poor copy, etc)??

Whatever savings you might attain aren't worth the risk. Don't have the money (or can't justify) buying a particular lens at the price you'd get from a reputable dealer? Buy it pre-owned from a reputable place (e.g. KEH). Still can't afford (or justify) it? Buy something less expensive (a non-L lens or a 3rd party lens like Sigma). But don't spend your time and money trying to find the deal of a lifetime on a commodity which is sold in high volume. "If it seems to be too good to be true" pricing is usually just that.

From the poorly written (or more likely poorly translated) FAQ:

4) Are the cheap gadgets and memory card for free? We are sorry for misunderstanding. They are of low cost, but not for free. They are for bulk wholesale, please contact our salesman if you want to import these items.

I didn't really considder it of course. Too many things didn't add up right..

But for the 1% remaining trust I thought I would ask if someone knew them.
Would have been nice though ;D

Order memory cards & see what happens. What've you got to lose?

I tried, out of curiosity. It doesn't work; the site just stalls at the order stage. Unsurprising, I concede.

Here's another one of the genre:

http://hk-sinceritycommerce.com/

With a name like "sincerity" how can you go wrong?   :)

Checked out that site (hk-sincerity) for a lark, and looked at the feedback section.  Noticed that the two weeks worth of feedback from April-May 2011 focused only on how great the products were (and said nothing about the company), I copied one comment in its' entirety and Google searched it.  No surprise, same comment, word for word was posted on amazon review website from March 2011.

I feel sorry for people who fall for this type of scam.
