Fog Roll
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:18:23 pm »

White fog rolling in over green mountains was getting a bit on the boring side. I did have to work some of the greens pretty hard in channels and layer masks to show a good definition at each value point.

The lower-right corner of the frame, that entire forested area there, sort of disintegrates for me. I can't really put my finger on why, but it's somehow simultaneously too flat and too busy. It's like it's just the same too-busy repeated pattern, as if it were a swatch of paisley fabric, perhaps. I can see you've been at some pains to make sure there's a ton of interesting detail in there, but it doesn't work for me.

Possibly a large print would work, by letting my eye see the, uh, trees rather than the forest, if you will.

The fog is lovely, as are the rest of the hills.

Amolitor is right. This is the kind of thing you can do well with a large print, but it doesn't hold up in a small monitor display at 72 ppi.

True, but as long as we all recognize this dilemma, it works. About half the stuff posted today is too small for clarity and focus. I hate how much is lost in the translation, but still feel that what is displayed is a relatively decent representation of the finished product.

Afraid I question whether or not it "works." Depends on what you're talking about. It doesn't work very well with landscapes, which need at least an 11 x 14 print to work well, and it certainly doesn't work well with the kind of image you posted here, which depends on details that only a large print can bring out. A small screen display of something like this is pretty much a meaningless jumble. But pictures of people, street photographs particularly, can work quite well even on a computer monitor at 72 ppi.

Just watched the latest part of the Shakespeare in Italy thinggy on BBC HD this evening: again, it makes me believe that the very best landscape photography comes out of the minds of cinematographers.

Believe me, if someone could make Rome and Stromboli look interesting, as if seen for the very first time, it had to be tonight. Bloody amazing. Not necessarily creative, though for a while I debated the point with myself, but as a matter of framing/editing the image space and using evening light - majestic stuff. But that I'd ever been able to shoot 'atmospherics' stills like that!

It prints 10 times better than it looks on here. I used an Epson 2880 with Jon Cone 9 grayscale inks on Cone Edition 310gsm paper and it's quite lovely.

Right now, I can only print to 13" wide. I did this one close to 12 x 19 with this slightly different crop...I am going to reprint today with this variation to see how it looks.
