It looks like you have a bit of vertical shake on that, otherwise it would be a great shot. The contrast is very nice.

This was from Vancouver. There was high humidity which ruined it a bit.

Aloha,

well its not with a telescope lol!

I did notice that if i used mirror lock up and a 12 second self timer shutter release, it was cleaner than with the 2 second timer.
there was little if no wind, its about as clean as I could get it, pretty clear conditions, maybe it would have been better to shoot when the moon was higher, less atmosphere to go through.
Also next time I try, I am going to add some weights to the tripod...
there is a 600mm available for this system...
hmmm when does it ever end!

It's not tripod fault if you really wish to shot the moon with 12 seconds exposure.
I shot a lot of 4 seconds moons at 500mm and it's already too much. Remember, the moon is moving FAST! :)

That is right, I was at ISO100 1/500sec but then I have over 300sq inches of lens.

Your image got me to try increasing the contrast. Crop:

Thanks, that was a good idea, your contrast really looks good.

I just looked at the OP again, it wasnt a 12 second shot, it was 12 second MLU. The shot was fast so it is a stabilization issue.

Aloha,

Really in retrospect, I should have stopped down and tried 400 ISO; from testing I've done with this lens
its relatively soft wide open. I always shoot at base ISO or 100 mostly 100, I have this so ingrained in my work flow I never consider moving up the ISO, under the conditions it was a pretty stable platform.
Manual focus at 4:30 Am that's the real problem lol!
Anyway when it gets this close again in 200 years; I'll try it again!

It will be almost as close for days. You also have a huge advantage being able to drive up to the observatory in Hawaii to get above the densest part of the atmosphere. Why not try again?  :)

Too much cloud (and rain) here to see the 'supermoon', but I did get a shot a few days previously - Nikon D200 with Nikkor 300mm f4 AF-S, at ISO 400, 1/500 sec, f4, handheld

Aloha,

Leaving for Paris tomorrow, can't wait to shoot there for 10 days!
So no more Moon for awhile, you know its really cold up on top of the volcano!
It won't be camera shake in any shot from there!

When I get back, I'll work on Maui, that's a good Idea to go to the top of Haleakala or close to the top,
Maybe find some silver swords, in bloom use some light painting to illuminate them with the milky way as a background! thanks!

Just to explain to anyone who doesn't get the "super moon" references - it so happens that this particular full moon occured when the moon was at perigee (closest point to Earth) in its elliptical orbit. So the moon appears about 10% larger than average, hence "super moon".

It isn't enough of a size difference to override long lens focal length and small-ish pixel size still being the most important factors in getting a good shot. See nice comparitive work at clarkvision.com.

I like the shots posted here!

I did a quick adaptive richardson-lucy on yours to remove the shake for you since you cant re-take it. Nothing fancy that takes time.  It's a bit better for your archive.

Good luck in Paris.
