The following is the "error' message I receive
Good - now that we know an error message actually is being returned we can try to identify and fix the problem.

Which do you use?
  • "Minutes to stay logged in"
  • "Always stay logged in"

Do you click - "Logout"?

I assume I continue to be logged in while I am reading or posting to the site, or exit from it (not "logout).  In any case, I have most often have been attempting to post this particular query (with attachment) shortly after logging in.

I assume I continue to be logged in...

With these login settings you'll automatically be logged out after 60 minutes --

Let's try this:
  • if you're logged-in first click Logout, then close any web-browsers you have open
  • open Firefox and go to http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/
  • click Login and fill out the details
  • post a reply to this discussion with Test as the comment
then
  • find that Test post and click Modify
  • Browse to your image file, Attach and click Save
  • find the Test post and check if the image attached

That's interesting!

After I click on the page 2 link for this discussion, when I'm logged-in, a blank page is shown.

After I click on the page 2 link for this discussion, when not logged-in, I see the posted comments.

I removed the file attachment that was breaking things.  It was labelled as a jpg file (by the .jpg extension), but it seems that it was not a valid jpg file (maybe a PSD file?).  Everyone should be able to see this page 2 again now.

Also worth noting the reason that it worked when not logged in is that guests don't get to see attached files, only logged-in users get to see them, so it wasn't triggering the error until it tried to process the jpg that was not a jpg.

Whew!  Many thanks.  Would anyone volunteer to have me send them my initial photo by email so they can also experiment with attaching it?  I would send it by private message, but it doesn't seem I can attach it to a private message.  Thanks, Jim

I'll PM you my email, I can test it for you.  it looks to be a very large file from what I saw when I removed it ...

Inserting a link to an image elsewhere
« Reply #31 on: May 14, 2012, 12:12:01 pm »

A related question: is it possible to use something like the HTML tag "img", to display within a post an image located elsewhere, rather than uploading the image file to LL? I have tried both inserting HTML code like
<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Elvis-Costello-This-Years-Model.jpg">
and fiddling with the "Insert Image" button and its "img in square brackets" markup,
but it fails for me.

P. S. Thanks Mark: It seems to be access limitations of the site I am linking to: that BBCode method from "Insert Image" failed with the Wikipedia image, just giving a missing image question mark:

but this one works:

You can't use the HTML img tag, but there's a BBCode tag for IMG that works in a similar manner and allows you to show it inline, like this:

[img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Elvis-Costello-This-Years-Model.jpg[/img]

You can get that by pressing the "insert image" button in the toolbar (second row down, first icon on the left) and then pasting in the URL between the img tags.

There's an extra quote in what you pasted for that image in your test :)

[img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Elvis-Costello-This-Years-Model.jpg"[/img]

It works if you remove the extraneous quote.
