The Purple Fringed Egret
« on: April 28, 2012, 07:20:21 pm »

When I was in Mexico recently I took a few pics of a white Egret (at least I think it is an Egret, I'm not a birder). This was a casual shot, through a chain link fence, the shot itself isn't great.

When I got home and looked at it on my computer though I was pretty amazed at how bad the purple fringing was. This was with an M9 and 90mm F/2.8. The M9 definitely has more CA issues than I'm used to say with my Canon gear.

As it wasn't an important shot, it was more funny to me than anything else. Then I read about the new CA controls in 4.1RC. (http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/04/new-color-fringe-correction-controls.html.

I recalled my little purple fringed bird and thought I'd give the new feature a test.

The first image is my crop of this image. Since this is reduced for the web, the fringing is not quite as apparent as at full size, which is shown in the second image, a screen grab in LR.

I then hit the fringe with the eyedropper, and LR adjusted the Amount and the Purple Hue. The purple disappeared. Pretty cool.

There is still a darkened outline where the purple was. It's nowhere near as objectionable, of course. I played with different amounts and hues, but it didn't get any better than just the eyedropper model.

If anyone has ideas about this darkened area I'm happy to try them.
