AFi/Hy6, 645DF and the Leaf Aptus II.
« on: April 21, 2012, 01:53:17 am »

I saw a video of Frank Doorhof demoing the AFi-II (back in 2008) and he said the great thing about the back is that it can go from the AFi to his 645AF to his RZ (or maybe even though he was demoing the whole product he was only referring to the back? 1:31 at/on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXtjHxfFe_M)

When I spoke to Leaf they said the AFi had a dedicated mount, and wasn't cross compatible.

Obviously I don't want two of the same backs for two separate mounts, and sending it back to MAC group each time to have it swapped over isn't exactly practical. Is it possible to get an adapter or to obtain the various mounts off the company to swap them over myself?

Any insight would greatly be appreciated.

The AFi back can be mounted on an RZ with an adapter. It involves with taking the 4 pins out and screwing the back on the adapter. The adapter comes with the relevant hex key and screw driver

The AFi back CANNOT be mounted on the 645 body

Hope this helps

But the Leaf back is fine with the 6060, yeah?

The 6060 AFAIK is a film back...nothing to do with the Leaf back...

Typo. The Leaf AFi is fine to mount a 6060 film back is what I meant to say/ask.

Yes, you can mount either of the film backs on the AFi body. The way it works is there is a small frame that has the 4 pins on one side and this fits into the camera body as the digital back would.  Then the film back latches into the frame.  With the 645 film back, you can use the slide to cover the film and pop out the film back rotate it and pop it right back in to change the orientation.  Takes like 3 seconds.    With the 6060 this is obviously not needed but you could have for example two different types of film each in their own back and you could change back and forth easily.

Recently I bought the AFi back to Maymiya RZ adapter to play  with (and only play as the AFi is a much nicer camera) but haven't used it yet but certainly it can be done.  There is also an AFi back to 4x5 camera adapter as well.

That is very good information to have regarding the process for attaching the Afi-II to an RZ. I am looking at upgrading from my Afi-7 to an Afi-II 12, and will be using it primarily on my Hy6, but would also like to be able to use it with my RZ67-II (and it's lovely 110mm f/2.8). Glad to know that it is a simple procedure to adapt for use. (as well as compatibility with tech cameras in the future, or should I say with future budgets. :)

Does that mean you'll be selling your AFi II 7?

I actually have a v1 Afi-7, and am planning on trading it in through a dealer (it is worth more in trade than I would get selling it outright due to Mamiya's trade-in promotion).
